Marriage Blog

No Refunds. No Exchanges.

Here is a throwback blog piece from the days when I thought a ‘couples blog’ would be fun. Lesson learned I am the blogger of the family. I was expecting my husband to create ‘content’ while holding down a full-time career outside our home. That was a lofty goal, that was destined for disaster. So, if this looks familiar, then you are correct!

The following is one of my favorite ‘inside jokes’ in our marriage. Read on to see why we tell each other randomly “No Refunds. No Exchanges”.

Flashback to your wedding, and imagine your mother blurting out during the rehearsal “No Refunds! No Exchanges!” and the entire room bursts into laughter. That was our wedding rehearsal and that was my mother. I am thankful for her comedic timing and classiness to refrain from exclaiming that during the actual ceremony. I wouldn’t think so fondly of the statement or see how applicable it would end up being should she have chosen the latter.

As funny as my mother was that evening there is truth to her statement. The divorce rate is almost twice the rate it was in 1960. It is estimated that 40-50% of recent marriages will end in separation and we are not talking about until death do us part.  Corey and I have divorces in our past and my mother was honestly letting us know that she supported our marriage and we were locking in for a lifetime this go-round.

Marriage is a daily choice. It takes you on a journey and the decision to make ‘No Refunds – No Exchanges” your refund policy should start from day one. Challenges are inevitable and when they rear their nasty head, tell them “No Refunds. No Exchanges.” because “After all we want to keep it together this time.” to quote Too Tall.
